Location & Transportation
The Sunrise Safari starts in the village of Barber, just over a half-hour drive from downtown Willemstad. The meeting point is the parking lot of the local “snèk” 4th of July, across from the Barber church (the large yellow church that you’ll see from a good distance away).
No transportation is provided for this excursion.
What to expect
On this Sunrise Safari, you’ll sit comfortably in the back of the cozy yet charming safari vehicle (with an upside-down boat for a roof!). From your seat, you can look over the cab and enjoy a stunning 360-degree view. Your guide, Arie-Jan, will expertly drive you along rugged trails and undiscovered dirt roads, stopping occasionally to share stories and point out sights. The best part of this tour is that, on the one hand, you’ll be driving boldly (yet calmly) through the mud and dust, but on the other hand, it’s a friendly and informative tour where you’ll learn all sorts of fun facts about Curaçao.
The Sunrise Safari Tour takes you through the quiet area of Curaçao (called Banda Abou), including the rugged wilderness on the northern side of the island. It frequently takes you down trails you’d be better off avoiding in your own rental car. But that’s no problem for the safari vehicle—you’ll be sitting “high and dry” in the back. Arie-Jan drives smoothly, so you won’t be jostled around the whole time, and mud won’t be flying all over you. Be sure to wear “safari-appropriate” clothing (no white!), because it can get a bit dusty, especially during dry seasons.
Stops Along the Way
There are three stops along the north coast:
– Boka Patrick: The rough sea washes a lot of driftwood and (unfortunately) plastic ashore here. Marvel at the natural partition.
– Natural Jacuzzi (Suplado): Here, the sea bursts out of a blowhole with great force. Wonderfully refreshing and a sight to behold.
– Ascencion Country House: This beautiful country house has a spooky story….
On the south coast, we’ll stop at the private beach of the San Juan estate. Here you can enjoy sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling.
After visiting the private beach, Arie-Jan will drive back to the starting point, where a delicious light lunch will be waiting for you.
