Snorkeling trips Curaçao: 5 reasons

Why should you do a Snorkeling Trip on Curaçao? We give you 5 reasons to book a great trip right now:

1. Lots to see soon

If you go snorkeling on Curaçao, you will be able to see a lot as soon as you put your head under the water. Because the water is so incredibly clear, you will look -without realizing it- directly at the bottom, which may be 10 meters or more below you. Along the entire coastline of Curaçao, the seabed slopes fairly gradually from the shore line. So you can snorkel quite a bit and see something everywhere. Beautiful coral, of course all kinds of colorful fish and in several places you can encounter shipwrecks or the like.

2. Little current

Even though you are snorkeling on “open sea,” in most places you will have little to no trouble with currents or high waves. Many beaches lie in bays, sometimes with large breakwaters at the edge. This makes it ideal for beginners to go snorkeling on Curaçao.

3. Beautiful nature and unique objects

Curaçao has a lot to offer if you want to snorkel. There is plenty of coral, plenty of tropical and brightly colored fish, and at some locations unique objects are visible:
Tugboat: A sunken boat lies about 7 meters deep. Curaçao’s No. 1 snorkeling location, east of Jan Thiel.
King Neptune: At Playa Piskado on the west side of Curaçao, a statue of King Neptune lies in the water.
Chichi: At a few locations, including also at Playa Kalki, you will find underwater the “world-famous” Chichi scultures, so typical of Curaçao.

4. For every level

Curaçao snorkeling trips are suitable for every level of snorkeler. Going snorkeling for the very first time ever? No problem: you have all the time and space you need to pick it up. And have you snorkeled many times before, even then it will still be fun to snorkel on Curaçao and discover all kinds of things.

5. Fully catered

A snorkel trip on Curaçao is completely taken care of. Of course there is for everyone a snorkel set available: mask + snorkel (no fins). You also get good guidance from the crew of the boat. On the boat, and if necessary with you in the water, you get the tips & tricks to fully enjoy the snorkel trip. And the trips that last longer than 3 hours also include a nice lunch and wonderfully refreshing drinks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to snorkel on Curaçao?

All along the coastline of Curaçao you can have fun snorkeling, but there are some top locations:
1- Tugboat: At this sunken boat (7 meters deep) you can see lots of coral and a large number of colorful tropical fish.
2- Blue Room: This cave is “world famous. Through a freak of nature a blue light shines into the cave, caused by the sun shining through the water.
3- Playa Piskadó: A beach all the way on the west side of Curaçao. The beach itself is not very special, but you can snorkel here with fairly high certainty next to large sea turtles. Note: This location is fairly exploited in terms of tourists. Always crowded (especially when there are buses with cruise guests), tourist market stalls and not enough parking space for the cars.
4- Playa Lagun: a lovely intimate beach between 2 high cliffs. And right by those cliffs on the sides you can snorkel wonderfully and see lots of marine life between the rocks.

I don’t have snorkel gear, can I borrow it from the boat?

Yes definitely, with every snorkel trip you book through NaarCuracao you can borrow a snorkel set from the boat. That gets you goggles and a snorkel (no swim fins).

I’ve never snorkeled before, is that a problem?

No way, every snorkeling trip is for beginner level but also fun for advanced divers. Feel free to ask the crew to help you put on the right size goggles properly.

Where can you find turtles on Curaçao?

At Playa Piskadó/Playa Grandi (two names for the same beach) it is actually a certainty that you can admire turtles up close. Note: Do not touch and give them space!!! Because local fishermen slaughter their catch here on the pier and throw the offal into the sea, this is a popular place for the turtles to find food quite easily. This also has a downside: sometimes the fishermen throw more waste into the sea than the turtles can eat, so you swim among the offal.
Unfortunately, this is a very touristy location so it is often very crowded. Usually actually just too busy, especially if there is also one or more buses with cruise guests.
You can also encounter the turtles at Playa Lagun and Daaibooi, but the chances are smaller than at Piskadó.

Do you need water shoes when snorkeling on Curaçao?

That can be handy if you go snorkeling “on the loose,” on your own from a beach. At several snorkel sites on Curaçao you walk into the water over stones and some of the stones can be quite sharp. It is not a must, but if you have water shoes with you anyway, you can just as easily put them on for snorkeling.
If you join a snorkeling trip, you will enter (and exit) the water from the boat and you will not be bothered by the stones.
